Cabinet Photo Young Woman, Helen Cheney or Chunny; Augusta, Maine studio

Cabinet photograph of a young woman identified on reverse as Hellen Chunny or Hellen Cheenny; could very well be Helen Cheney; photograph taken by Ayer studio, Corner Bridge & Water Streets, Augusta, Maine.

If you have a different idea on her name, please let me know.

I did find a Helen Clark Cheney, the wife of Henry George Cheney, in Randolph, Maine, not far from Augusta.  This Helen was born in May 1868 in Vassalboro, Maine, the daughter of William Bicknell Austin and his wife Sarah Joy (Clark) Austin.  As for Henry George Cheney, I found two sources online which had him listed alternatively as George Henry Cheney.  He was born in Whitefield, Maine, in July 1964, the son of Isaac and Harriet Frances (Yeaton) Cheney.

If you recognize this woman from your family albums or if the name is familiar to you from genealogical or historical research, I would most appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I have several envelopes addressed to Bernard L. Cheney in Newport Maine; the envelopes are from Berlin, Germany and are from the 1940s. In the 1940 Census, Bernard L. Cheney lived in Lubec, Washington County, Maine. I am trying to find him or his descendants. I think that he or his family gave my dad these envelopes back in the 1960s when my dad was a stamp collector.

  2. Katie, I don't want to put the link here as the event is so new, but if you google his name, you'll find his obituary with a listing of his three grandsons. Interestingly, the obit mentions that Bernard fought in the Battle of the Bulge and served at Berlin for a time after the war had ended. The letters may have come from someone he served with. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I have death record information and grave stone data of Hellen A. CHEENEY...born c. Mar. 20 1835...death was in Medway, MA...dates match those on a stone in Chippenhook Cemetery, Clarenton, VT. - Nov. 6, 1870. Death record states she was born in Rutland, VT....both "records" note parents as Abner and Perley Cheeney. She was single at death. Is this picture her...good question?! Grave stone is in the plots of other of my family. BATV@Juno.com

  4. Boy, that sure is intriguing - the spelling of both given and surname is so close... I wonder if Helen A. Cheeney worked or vacationed in the Augusta, Maine area? The woman in the photograph seems young for someone born in 1835 - perhaps there was a niece... Thanks for your comment, Barbara!
