1917 postcard showing Fort Devens, Massachusetts; addressed to Antone, Dennysville, Maine

November 22, 1917 postcard showing U.S. Field Artillery, Camp Devens, Ayer, Massachusetts, addressed to Mr. Phil Antone, Dennysville, Maine.

Transcription:

How is Phil getting along these days.  I am feeling fine and having a good time  I expect to come home for a day or two next week.  This building I mark is where I live.  Ans. please  F. C. D. Supply, 303rd.  F. A. Camp Devens, Mass."

Phil Antone was likely Philip Cushing Antone, born in Maine in 1897, the son of James Edward and Susan Antone. He married Abbie Faye Dunn in 1927.  He may have married Gladys Leighton of Lubec, Maine, earlier in 1920, but that marriage occurred between the two Census enumerations, so I don't have a Census record of them together.  I mention it because I find two marriages in the Maine Marriages online database for Philip C. Antone of Dennysville, Maine.   He died in 1995 in Pembroke, Maine.

The great grandfather of Philip C. Antone was possibly Portuguese sailor Francis Antone, who died in 1828 in an accident in the Caribbean while captaining a ship.  Francis may be the same Francis Antone who was one of the earliest settlers of Edmunds, Maine, but I would love to hear from a reader to verify this.

It's tempting to think that the writer of the postcard, F. A., was also named Antone, but I don't know if he was.

If you have any insights into the Antone family of Edmunds, Dennysville or Pembroke, Maine, I would most appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks for stopping by!
