Assuming I have the placement figured out correctly, this is a photo of Ethel Marie Lord, when a student at Surry High School in Surry, Maine. The identifications on the reverse of the photograph started out with "Back Row", but then simply listed all of the students, without setting some of them off with a "front row".
The entire class photo [which I discussed in an earlier post Early 20th Century photograph of Surry, Maine high school students and teacher Mr. Shorey ] is below.
Here is the reverse of the photograph so that you can draw your own conclusions about the placement. If you feel that the girl shown above is not Mildred Laura Lord, please scroll down to the comments section or contact me directly. Please do the same if the genealogy below has errors, or if you have further information or insights.
From online research, hopefully correct:
Ethel Marie Lord was a cousin to Mildred Laura Lord, discussed in an earlier post; Mildred is standing to the left of Ethel, as viewed in the photograph.
Ethel Marie Lord was born 24 July 1895 in Surry, Maine, the daughter of Oscar Clarence and Millie Ardelle (Gaspar) Lord. Her paternal grandparents were Simeon and Susan Maria (Ray) Lord. Her maternal grandparents were Gardiner Granville Gaspar and his wife Cecilia Permelia (Treworgy) Gaspar.
She married William Potter Leonard in 1929. He was born 24 January 1899 on Bartlett's Island, off Mount Desert Island, in Hancock County, Maine, the son of Samuel and Clara Augusta (Bartlett) Leonard. I haven't yet found out the parents of Samuel Leonard, but William's maternal grandparents were Augustus and Ada J. (Ober) Bartlett.
After her marriage, Ethel Marie (Lord) Leonard lived on Mount Desert Island. I found at least one child for the couple. In the 1930 Census, William was doing road work, and Ethel was teaching in public school.
