1844 Document of Deerfield, New Hampshire, or Deerfield, Massachusetts; Nathan Chase, Jr., Hilliard Fogg

Transcript:  Deerfield, March 9th 1844
On demand for value received I promise to pay Hilliard Fogg on order thirty dollars with interest $30.00.  Nathan Chase [?].

I purchased this scrap of paper some years ago on eBay.  The seller indicated the document was from  Deerfield, Massachusetts, but I feel the town involved is actually Deerfield, New Hampshire.  The names of the two men in the document are Nathan Chase and Hilliard Fogg, and I found both of these names in the Deerfield, New Hampshire area.

The seller also indicated that Nathan Chase was a Jr., from a character(s) appearing just after his name. I wasn't able to find a Nathan Chase, Jr. in Deerfield, New Hampshire, but I did find one whose father was Joseph Chase.  It's possible the character(s) do not signify "Jr."

If you would scan the document above and let me know what you think the character(s) after his name is/are, I would appreciate your input.

Researching online for the two men, with hopefully correct information:

Hilliard Fogg was born about 1797 in New Hampshire, the son of James and Miriam (Williams) Fogg.  His paternal grandparents were James and Apphia (Collins) Fogg.  I haven't as yet found the names of Miriam Williams' parents, or if Williams was her maiden name.  Hilliard Fogg married Sarah H. Fogg, who was born 21 August 1799, in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the daughter of Enoch and Sarah (Wallace) Fogg.

Hillard and Sarah raised at least two sons, Eben Fogg and Hilliard Freeman Fogg.

Nathan Chase, assuming I have the correct person, was born 9 December 1805 in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Sanborn) Chase.  His paternal grandparents were Moses and Susannah (possibly Kelley) Chase.  His maternal grandparents were Daniel and Elizabeth (Sanborn) Sanborn.

In 1831 he married Eliza Chase, who was born 18 November 1806, the daughter of John and Hannah (Sanborn) Chase.  Her paternal grandparents were Moses and Susannah (possibly Kelley) Chase.  Her maternal grandparents were Daniel and Elizabeth (Sanborn) Sanborn.

Nathan and Eliza raised a large family of perhaps seven in Deerfield, New Hampshire.
