May 1907 photograph of Horace S. Stewart of Corinth, Maine; year before he drowned at 20

May 1907 photograph of a young man identified on reverse as Horace Stewart, who was apparently a student at East Corinth Academy, judging from some initials in the upper right corner.  The photograph was taken by the Ramsdell Studio in Bangor, Maine.

Also indicated on the reverse is that Horace drowned in 1908.

From online research, hopefully correct:

Horace S. Stewart was born 28 March 1890 in Maine, the son of Willis J. Stewart and his wife Hattie E. (Jillson) Stewart.  Horace's paternal grandparents were James William Stewart or Steward and wife Hannah Frances (Hamilton) Stewart.  His maternal grandparents were Charles A. and Sarah Catherine (Kelty) Jillson of Lynn, Massachusetts.

Horace drowned on 25 April 1908 at Milo, Maine, in Piscataquis County.  His death record with the State of Maine gave his occupation as car repairman, I assume at the railroad yards in the area of Milo and Brownville.  How he drowned,  I don't know, but I do know that crossing rivers in those days was at times a scary prospect, even on bridges.  It's also possible that he was fishing and got carried away.

  1. Horace Stewart was my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. His sister Alice's descendants(Alice married Carroll Duran) are still in Corinth. If anyone has more information about this Stewart family, I would be delighted to hear from you:

  2. Thanks for your comment and the additional information about Horace's sister. It would be neat if you connect with some as yet unknown relatives as a result of this post!
