1880s Autograph Album of Charles Curtis Scott of Dexter, Maine

1880s autograph album of Charles Curtis Scott of Dexter, Maine.

The album is approximately 4-1/4" x 3" and contains 18 pages signed by Charles himself and his relatives.  An alphabetical list of signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Charles Curtis Scott was born 4 June 1876 in Scott County, Minnesota, the son of Walter and Sylvia "Sib" (Sturtevant) Scott, who were born at Montpelier, Vermont, and Dexter, Maine, respectively.

After graduating from Dexter High School in 1895, Charles entered the University of Maine where he debated, played baseball and engaged in military training.  At the outbreak of the Spanish American War, Charles enlisted.

Sadly, he died on 31 August 1898 at a hospital at Portland, Maine, where he lost a battle with typhoid malaria contracted while serving as a Sergeant in Company D of the First Maine Regiment of US Volunteers at Chickamauga, Georgia.

The 1900 issue of the University of Maine Prism is dedicated to Charles and three other graduates who lost their lives under similar circumstances.  See the page dedicated to Charles, which shows a photograph and a brief biography.

Charles' father Walter Scott and his second wife Annie R. Scott signed facing pages in the album.  Charles' mother Sylvia "Sib" (Sturtevant) Scott had died before the album was commenced.

Charles' paternal grandparents were Charles and Margaret (Hamilton) Scott.   Grandfather Charles had died in 1864, but grandmother Margaret and her second husband Daniel W. Coates of Jordan, Minnesota, signed facing pages in 1885.
