c1904 Photograph of Harry Dennett Haley of Gardiner, Maine; while a student at the University of Maine

c1904 photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as H. D. Haley.  The photograph was found with a collection of photographs of University of Maine students, many of them in the Class of 1904 in the engineering department.

Thanks to the fact that Fogler Library at the University of Maine has put the "Prism" yearbooks online, I was able to find a Harry Dennett Haley, a civil engineering student, listed in the junior class of the 1904 Prism.  Thankfully his photo was there, and the two match.  Note: many online records, official and otherwise, have Dennett spelled as Dennet.

The reverse of the photograph, shown below, has been enhanced to show a contract of the handwriting against the background.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Harry Dennett Haley was born 20 February 1882 at Gardiner, Maine, son of William Dennett Haley, Sr., and Lucinda Lizette (Moore) Haley, who were born at Pittston, Maine, and Gardiner, Maine, respectively.

Harry's paternal grandparents were Woodbridge and Jane (Button) Haley.  His maternal grandparents were James D. and Harriet N. (Baker) Moore.

After graduation from the University of Maine, Harry moved to Oregon, which is the residence he used on his 1911 marriage record.

On 16 September 1911, Harry married Lucile L. Lothrop, daughter of Elias Lane Lothrop and Marie Lucile Louise (Piaget) Lothrop, who were born at Leeds, Maine, and New Orleans, Louisiana, respectively.  Lucile was born about October 1882 in Louisiana.

In 1918, when Harry completed his World War I Draft Registration Card, he and Lucile were living at Portland, Oregon.   It appears they stayed in Oregon, at least through to the enumeration of the 1940 Census, and raised a family there.

If you have corrections to the information above or additional information on the Haley, Button, Moore, Baker, Lothrop and Piaget families, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

    2. I've been asking my father, Harry's son, about his past. The only surname he wasn't familiar with was Button. My father is 91, and his memory is fading.
