Photograph of Roscoe Henderson Hupper of Martinsville, Maine

[Note: this post has been amended to include clarifying information from Reader Ed.]

Photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as Roscoe H. Hupper, H. A., '04, Martinsville, Maine.  Martinsville is a village in St. George, Maine.  Reader Ed has discovered that H. A. referred to Hebron Academy at Hebron, Maine.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Roscoe Henderson Hupper was born 11 March 1883 at Thomaston, Maine, son of sea captain Joel Hupper and his wife Mary E. (Alden) Hupper.

Roscoe's paternal grandparents were John and Sarah Ann (Seavey) Hupper.  I'm hoping a reader can provide the names of Roscoe's maternal grandparents.

Note: a reader states that Roscoe's maternal grandparents were Steven Seavey and Jean Hawthorne.  If you're a relative, see the comments section, as the reader notes that there's other information to share.

I don't have the names of Roscoe's maternal grandparents, but there was a Mary Alden who lived at Hampden, Maine, the daughter of Augustus and Sarah Alden, born about the same year as various Censuses show as the birth year of Mary (Alden) Hupper.   Hopefully a reader will share information to solve the mystery.

Reader Ed provided a link to an article in the Lewiston [Maine] Evening Journal about the 1904 Hebron Academy commencement.  Roscoe was the valedictorian.

Another blog post features a fellow 1904 Hebron Academy graduate - Geneva May Teague.

After graduating from Hebron Academy, Roscoe went on to Bowdoin College and George Washington Law School, from which he graduated in 1910.  He became one of the foremost admiralty lawyers of his day.  He's mentioned in the book The Life and Century of Charles C. Burlingham, New York's First Citizen 1858-1959, by George Martin.

Roscoe donated a first edition of James Audubon's bird prints to Bowdoin College in memory of his mother Mary (Alden) Hupper.  It's on display at the George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections and Archives, at the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library.  A similar copy recently sold for $7.9 million.

Bowdoin College conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Laws. Read a brief write-up here.

In the 1920s, Roscoe married Dorothy Healy, daughter of Dr. Henry Herbert Healy and Maud (Wallace) Healy, Ontario, Canada natives who settled in North Dakota.  Dorothy, a University of North Dakota graduate, was born at Michigan City, North Dakota, on 13 September 1899.

The couple lived at New York City and Martinsville, in St. George, Maine.  They had three sons:
  • John R. Hupper
  • Roger W. Hupper
  • Joel H. Hupper
Roscoe Henderson Hupper died in 1967 at New York City.  Dorothy died in 2003.  Read her obituary here.

If you have corrections and/or clarifications to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

I am a cousin of Roscoe Hupper's. He was my grandfather's first cousin. I have some info on him and his parents. I believe you have the correct info on his mother, family telling me that she was a direct descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower and had a small chair from the Alden family. Can I get a copy of this page?

    1. Not sure what you mean - are you asking for permission to use this page for your family records or a presentation? If so, yes, with attribution. I'd love to see a photograph of the chair, if you have one!

  2. My grandfather was Roscoe's cousin. Roscoe's maternal grandparents were Steven Seavey and Jean Hawthorne. If you're on Ancestry I can share what I have.

    1. Not my family, but I amended the post with Roscoe's maternal grandparents' names and noted, for the benefit of any relatives who might happen by, that the comments section contains a comment of someone with more information - in the hopes that some cousins might meet! (I'll connect you with anyone interested)
