1890s/1900s Autograph Album of Annie Schanno of St. Paul, Minnesota

1890s autograph album of Annie Schanno of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Note: be sure to read the comments

Interestingly, I read in a brief biography of Emile Schanno of Pennsylvania, who may or may not have been related, that the name Schanno derived from Jeannot, a surname from southern France, that Emile's ancestor changed to Schanno when the family moved from France to Switzerland during conflicted times.

Annie signed a page at the beginning of the album, on March 2, 1891, at St. Paul, Minnesota.  At some point, Annie resewed the binding on the album and caused some of the right edge of many pages to be hidden from view, as you can see with her own page.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/2" and contains the sentiments of over 60 of Annie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Annie Schanno, possibly Annetta L. Schanno, was born 4 May 1872 in Minnesota, the daughter of Matthias Schanno, also called Matthew Schanno, and Hattie Louise (Freid) Schanno, who were born in Wisconsin and in Sweden, respectively.  Hattie's birth date was included on her Minnesota Death Record.

Matthias' parents were both born in Germany and emigrated to the United States at least by the 1840s when Matthias was born at Wisconsin.  They may have been Jacob and Catherine Schanno, but I don't have confirmation of that.

And I don't have any information on the parents of Hattie Louise (Freid) Schanno.

I believe that Annie had three siblings: Iona; Herbert John; and Mayme Hazel.  Herbert signed a page in the album on September 10, 1900.

Two people named Holmes signed pages in the album and indicated they were Annie's cousins.  One was signed by Alma Holmes on September 28, 1894 at White Rock, Minnesota.  The other page was also signed at on September 28, 1894 at White Rock, but I can't make out the given name.  If you can supply the missing name, please leave a comment.

Note: scroll to the comments section for a reader's discovery that there were two sisters named Alma and Selma in Goodhue County, Minnesota.  Their father was John Holm/Holms/Holmes, and their mother was Sophia (Freid) Holm/Holms/Holmes.  Sophia may have been a sister, or other relative, of Annie's mother Hattie (Freid) Schanno.

On 30 April 1901 at St. Paul, Minnesota, Annie married George E. Wharton, son of Henry and Isabel Wharton.  Their son George was born in 1902.  He in turn had a son named John, who wrote a page in his grandmother Annie's album on September 17, 1951.  "Grandma's Apple Dumpling is Always In To Something."

Annie died in 1958 at Ramsey, Minnesota.
