Cabinet Photograph of Joshua A. Lane, by a Boston, Massachusett studio

Photograph taken by the Elmer Chickering studio of an older man identified on the front as Joshua A. Lane.   The photograph was taken at the Elmer Chickering studio at 21 West Street, Boston, Massachusetts.

The photograph was found with photographs from the Hampton, New Hampshire, area, and other areas, and I did happen to find a Joshua A. Lane from there, a noted merchant, though I have no way of knowing if the man above is the Hampton, New Hampshire Joshua A. Lane.

In case, they are one and the same, here is what I found about him online - corrections welcome!

Joshua A. Lane was born 1 November 1831 at Hampton, New Hampshire, son of Ebenezer and Sarah (Emery) Lane.  He married Lydia A. Garland, daughter of Adna and Nancy (Brown) Garland, on 3 January 1867 in New Hampshire.

The couple had three children, Howard G., Ida M. and Sadie Belle.

I found an interesting account of his life here.

There was another Joshua A. Lane at Lancaster, Massachusetts, and perhaps another, or the same one, at Athol, Massachusetts.  A Joshua A. Lane at Lancaster, born about 1821, married M. A.  Houghton on 1 February 1849; Mary Jane Houghton on 26 November 1856; and Sarah E. Brown Batterson on 17 April 1866.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, if you recognize Joshua from your family albums or research, or if you believe the Joshua A. Lane in the photograph is a different man from those mentioned above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!
