1867-1900 Autograph Album of Clement Josiah Woodward of Keene, New Hampshire

1867-1900 autograph album that belonged to Clement Josiah Woodward of Keene, New Hampshire; most of the sentiments were acquired while he was a student at the New London Literary and Scientific Institution, which operates today as Colby-Sawyer College.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" by a bit over 4" and is thicker than most, about 3/4".  It contains the sentiments of 82 of Clement's friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From the 1870 Annual Report of the New Hampshire State Board of Education:

Acting Principals Ephraim Knight and Laban E. Warren inscribed pages in Clement's album in the Fall of 1867.

Arianna H. Pulcifer, an instructor in French, of Lake Village, New Hampshire, inscribed a page at New London, New Hampshire, on October 24, 1867.

Penmanship instructor Algernon P. Shattuck inscribed the first page of Clement's album at New London, New Hampshire, on November 14, 1867 and showed his penmanship expertise.

One of Clement's classmates, Artemas Wyman Sawyer, who inscribed a page on October 21, 1867, became president of Acadia College at Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Clement Josiah Woodward was born September 7, 1850 at Roxbury, New Hampshire, the son of Josiah Mason Woodward and Sarah Jane (Newcomb) Woodward, both Cheshire County, New Hampshire, natives.  By the time he graduated from the Institute, the family was living at Keene, New Hampshire, as the page below, from the fifteenth annual catalog published in 1868, shows.

On October 3, 1877, Clement married Caroline Frances Hirsch, "Carrie", daughter of Charles Frederick Hirsch and Isabelle M. (Jameson) Hirsch.  Carrie was born at Keene, New Hampshire, on October 27, 1852.   They had a son, Paul Jameson Woodward, born November 7, 1887 at Keene, New Hampshire.

Clement worked as a newspaper owner and editor.
