1848 Spelling Book of Miss Martha J. Munroe of Taunton, Massachusetts

Spelling book with inscription on first end paper: Property of Miss Martha J. Munroe, Taunton, 1848

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Martha Jane Munroe was born 13 January 1837, the daughter of William and Sophia (Williams) Munroe/Monroe.  She married George Alfred Dunham, son of Schuyler and Sally (White) Dunham.  George was born 12 July 1836.  They were living at Taunton, Massachusetts, at the time of the 1880 Census; Norton, Massachusetts, at the time of the 1900 Census and Attleborough, Massachusetts, at the time of the 1910 Census.

I believe they had five children:
  1. Georgietta Dunham (1859-1859)
  2. Erford Clinton Dunham (1860-1908)
  3. Clara Jane Dunham (1867-1940); married Arthur Wells Twombley
  4. George Alfred Dunham, Jr. (1873-1948); married Helen Tew Lane and Mabel Estella Field
  5. Nellie A. Dunham (1892-1979); possibly an adopted daughter
Martha died in 1916 and George in 1920.  They're buried at Oakland Cemetery at Taunton, Massachusetts, with two of their children, Georgietta Dunham and Erford Clinton Dunham.  Their grandson, Howard C. Dunham, son of George Alfred Dunham, Jr., and Helen Tew (Lane) Dunham, is also buried with them.  Howard was born 26 January 1896 and died 13 August 1896.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

The spelling book was published by Tappan, Whittemore & Mason, 114 Washington Street, Boston, Massachusetts about 1844.  Below are images of a few pages, some with doodling on them.

1880-1893 Autograph Album of Henry Clinton Monroe of Middleborough, Massachusetts

1880-1893 autograph album that belonged to Henry Clinton Monroe of Middleborough, Massachusetts.

This album was found with a spelling book that was the property of a Miss Martha J. Munroe in 1848.  She was born in 1836, the daughter of William and Sophia (Williams) Munroe/Monroe.  Martha would later marry George Alfred Dunham.

Henry marked his album with his name in two places.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 31 of Henry's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, with any personal information, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Henry Clinton Monroe was born 18 June 1863 at New Bedford, Massachusetts, the son of Daniel Brainard Monroe and Samantha Luphemia (Tinkham) Monroe.  Daniel signed a page in Henry's album on April 17, 1881 at Middleborough, Massachusetts, which he spelled Middleboro.

It appears that Henry married four times:
  1. On 15 June 1886 to Alvaretta Thompson, daughter of Judah and Jane B. (Hubbard) Thompson.  Alvaretta was born 13 November 1857 at New Haven, Connecticut.  She died 25 November 1887 at Middleborough, Massachusetts.
  2. On 1 October 1890 at Newton, Massachusetts, to Susan Lucretia Loring, 'Susie", daughter of Edwin P. and Lucy (Warren) Loring.  Susie was born 14 September 1861 at Rome Station, Indiana, the daughter of Edwin Phelps Loring and Lucy L. (Warren) Loring.  Susie died 3 January 1897.
  3. On 23 June 1898 at Lakeville, Massachusetts, to Minnie Church (Leonard) Griffin, widow of Frank A. Griffin.  Minnie was born 23 June 1872 at Rochester, Massachusetts, daughter of Stillman Winfield Leonard and Eliza Jane (Davis) Leonard.  Henry and Minnie had a daughter Dorothy, born 7 November 1899.  I believe Minnie lived until 1944, so apparently she and Henry divorced.
  4. On 15 September 1910 at Middleborough, Massachusetts, to Bertha Louise Martis, daughter of Henry Francis Martis and Mary Curtis (Brett) Martis.  Bertha was born 19 November 1975 at Brockton, Massachusetts; she died in 1967.
Henry Clinton Moore died at some point after the enumeration of the 1940 Census, at which time he and Bertha were living at Brockton, Massachusetts.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Notice that several of the signers were named Thompson and Loring.

1880-1897 Autograph Album of Lena G. Arnold of South Westport, Massachusetts; later married Herbert A. Brightman

1880-1897 autograph album that belonged to Lena G. Arnold of South Westport, Massachusetts.

Lena married Herbert A. Brightman of South Westport, Massachusetts, in 1886.  He signed two pages in the album, at least one of them well before their marriage, unless what looks like 1881 is actually 1887.

Their daughter Velna Edith Brightman of South Westport, Massachusetts also signed two pages in the album, one signed March 12, 1897.

The album measures approximately 5" x 3" and contains the sentiments of nearly 70 of Lena's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of signers, with any included personal information, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Lena G. Arnold was born about 1865 in Rhode Island, the daughter of Thomas and, possibly, Mary A. (Clark) Arnold.  She may have been the Arnold child born at Providence, Rhode Island, on 3 January 1875, to parents Thomas A. Arnold and Mary A. Arnold, according to an entry in the Rhode Island Births and Christenings 1600-1914.   I wonder if Mary was Mary Amey; if so, she might have been the mother of Lena's older sister Clara I. Arnold, born 20 May 1858 at Providence, Rhode Island.  Sadly, Clara died young on 20 April 1891 at Westport, Massachusetts.

There's a Rhode Island marriage record for the marriage of Thomas A. Arnold and Mary D. Clark at Providence, Rhode Island, on 26 December 1868.  Assuming this was Mary D. Clark's first marriage, her parents, according to the record, were John F. and Catherine Clark.  Either Lena's mother had died or she was born before her parents, Thomas A. Arnold and Mary D. (Clark?) Arnold were married.

As noted above, on December 25, 1886 at Tiverton, Rhode Island, Lena G. Arnold married Herbert A. Brightman.  Herbert was born 24 March 1861 at either Westport, Massachusetts, or Taunton, Massachusetts; there are records for both.  On the record indexed as Taunton, but appearing to be Westport, he's shown as the illegitimate son of Phoebe A. Boardman.  Several other people named Brightman signed pages in the album; refer to the list of signers below.

Lena G. (Arnold) Brightman and husband Herbert A. Brightman may have had only one child, the daughter Velna Edith Brightman as mentioned above.  They lived at Westport, Massachusetts.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1908-1912 Autograph Album of Viola, possibly Viola M. Briggs of Westport, Massachusetts

1908-1912 autograph album that belonged to a Viola of the Westport, Massachusetts, area.  She may have been Viola M. Briggs, daughter of Albert Bradford Briggs and Mary Elizabeth (Sherman) Briggs and future wife of Lester Clifford Lawson, whose 1890s-1910s autograph album was featured in another post.

Several of the signers indicated they were students at the school Rogers and Allens' at Fall River, Massachusetts.  A handwritten card with the school's name is inserted in the album.

One of the signers, Leslie E. Livingstone sketched himself in a Rogers & Allens' jersey and included his calling card.  He gave his address as 1232 Plymouth Avenue, Fall River, Massachusetts.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 54 of Viola's schoolmates, friends and possibly relatives.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, complete with any residential and school information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

In the event that the album owner was Viola M. Briggs, and from online research, hopefully correct:                                                               [corrections and additions welcome!]

Viola M. Briggs was born 27 April 1893 at Westport, Massachusetts, the daughter of boat builder Albert Bradford Briggs and Mary Elizabeth (Sherman) Briggs, who were both Westport, Massachusetts natives.  On 29 July 1917, Viola married Lester Clifford Lawton, son of Isaac Macomber Lawton and Annie D. (Lawton) Lawton.  Lester was born 7 June 1890 at Westport, Massachusetts.  Viola and Lester made their home at Westport, Massachusetts, and had at least one child, a daughter.

One signer mentioned W.H.S., which might have been Westport High School.  That signer was Janie M. Hull, who signed on January 5, 1909.

Several signers indicated they were in the Class of 1911 at Rogers and Allens' school.  One of these was Elsie Hathaway of Pottersville, Massachusetts, presumably at Somerset, Massachusetts; she signed her page on January 26, 1911.

Other Rogers and Allens' students were Clarence T. Borden; Cora Brightman of Pottersville, Massachusetts; Miriam Marsden of Fall River, Massachusetts; Miriam A. Murray; Anna Gertrude Wood of Swansea, Massachusetts, the above mentioned Leslie E. Livingstone; and possibly more who didn't mention their school affiliation.

If you have a theory as to the identity of album owner Viola, or if you have information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1885-1898 Autograph Album of Hattie, Presumably of the Readfield, Maine, Area

1885-1898 autograph album that belonged to a Hattie, presumably of Kennebec County, Maine, in the Readfield, Maine area.  The only clue to the album owner's name is the sentiment left by Ida M. Sanborn of Vienna, Maine, on July 16, 1887.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of fourteen of Hattie's friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, including any residential or personal information they gave, appear at the end of this post.

Several of the signers were members of the Weston Family.  Annie F. (Haynes) Weston and her husband Thomas Milton Weston of Kents Hill, Maine, signed facing pages; he dated his inscription December 19, 1886.  Annie F. (Haynes/Haines) Weston was the daughter of Charles and Eliza A. (Low) Haynes.  Thomas Milton Weston was the son of Simeon and Lavinia (Blanchard) Weston.

The Hattie N. Weston of Kents Hill, Maine, who signed a page on September 19, 1886, was presumably Thomas Milton Weston's sister, Harriet Newell Weston.  Late in life, on December 23, 1928, she married widower Miles Everett Williams, whose first wife Ellen Susan (Joy) Williams had died earlier in the year.

Another sister of Thomas Milton Weston who signed a page in the album was Mary Alice (Weston) Rhino, or Alice Mary (Weston) Rhino, first wife of Simeon Lewis Rhino.  She signed her page on October 2, 1886, when she was living at Boston, Massachusetts.  She later married Charles F. Taylor.

Rosie H. Haynes of Winthrop, Maine, signed a page.  She was a sister of Annie F. (Haynes) Weston.

If you have a theory as to the identity of album owner Hattie, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1879-1880s Autograph Album of Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, of Holliston, Massachusetts

1879-1880s autograph album that belonged to Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, of Holliston, Massachusetts.  The albums contains many pages signed by people in the Holliston, Massachusetts, area, and in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where Ella and her parents moved at some point after 1880.

See other posts that feature an 1875-1877 autograph album and an 1878-1880s autograph album that belonged to Ella's brother John Franklin Wadsworth.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 66 of Ella's relatives, schoolmates and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of signers, complete with any family relationship, school or residence information, appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Mary Ella Wadsworth was born 28 October 1860 at New Sharon, Maine, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth, who were born in Maine and in Massachusetts respectively.  Ella's parents signed a page in her album.

Ella had six siblings, only one of whom, George Melvin Wadsworth, signed a page in her album.  To see the handwriting of Ella's other siblings, use the links above to view the posts on the two autograph albums of her brother John Franklin Wadsworth.

George Melvin Wadsworth signed his page as G. M. Wadsworth on a set of facing pages signed by 17 students at the Willard School.  A comment left on a post that featured the 1878-1885 autograph album of a Nellie ? of the Boston/Quincy, Massachusetts area indicated that Theresa Fegan and Nellie Fegan, presumably Theresa Fegan and Ellen B. Fegan below, were teachers at the Willard School at Quincy, Massachusetts.  The pages below are undated;  I don't know whether the signers were students, teachers or a combination of the two.

Signers on the facing pages above: 1) Alice E. Sanborn; 2) G. M. Wadsworth [presumably Ella's brother George Melvin Wadsworth]; 3) Nellie S. Dickey; 4) E. A. Desmond; 5) Rose W. Lewis; 6) Gertrude L. Gardner; 7) Ellen B. Fegan; 8) Jennie A. Corliss; 9) Mary Conway; 10) E. A. Newcomb; 11) Georgia M. Glines; 12) Theresa Fegan; 13) R. M. Chamberlin; 14) Grace L. Shaw; 15) Annie F. Burns; 16) Abbie H. Kelley; 17) J. M. Billings.

Ella signed a page as part of as group of 14 students in the Class of 1879 in the later album of her brother John Franklin Wadsworth.  Signers: 1) Ella Cushing; 2) Della M. Draper; 3) Mary Driscoll; 4) Eva M. Eames; 5) Effie L. Fiske; 6) Lucy B. Nichols; 7)  Ella Wadsworth; 8) Lizzie F. Barber; 9) Annie Blake; 10) W. H. Stevens; 11) Ed. Rawson; 12) T. T. Sheedy; 13) P. F. Gahan; 14) M. M. Parker [One or both M could be a W]; 15) Lizzie Wilder.

In the 1880 Census, "Ella" was shown as living at Medway, Massachusetts, with her parents and brothers Charles and Arthur.  At the time of the enumeration of the 1900 ["Mary E."] and 1910 ["Mary Ella"] Censuses, she, a schoolteacher, and her parents were living at Pawtucket, Rhode Island.  By 1920, Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth had died; "M. Ella", a music teacher in a public school, and her father were still at Pawtucket.  By the time of the 1930 Census of Pawtucket, John Wadsworth had died, and "Ella M." was still teaching, at the age of about 70.  It's interesting that she referred to herself as Ella M. Wadsworth in her album and in the 1930 Census, when there was no one else to speak for her.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1878-1880s Autograph Album of John Franklin Wadsworth of Massachusetts: Fall River, Holliston and Somerville

1878-1880s autograph album that belonged to John Franklin Wadsworth, "Frank", who was born in Maine and reared in Massachusetts.  The album contains autographs from two areas, the Holliston, Massachusetts, area, and the Fall River, Massachusetts area.  Many of the signers indicated they were in the Class of 1879, some if not all at Holliston High School.

See another post that features an autograph album kept by John Franklin Wadsworth from 1875 to 1877, with signers from the Somerville, Massachusetts area; the Holliston, Massachusetts area; and the Fall River, Massachusetts area.  And yet another post features the 1880s autograph album of Frank's sister Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, as her Maine birth record indicates.

As noted on the ownership page below, the album was apparently a Christmas gift.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 116 of Frank's relatives, schoolmates and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of signers, complete with any family relationship, school affiliation or residence information, appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

John Franklin Wadsworth was born 15 May 1862 at New Sharon, Maine, the son of John and Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth, who were born in Maine and Massachusetts respectively.  The Elizabeth Wadsworth who signed at page at Holliston, Massachusetts, on May 7, 1880, was presumably Frank's mother Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth.

Frank's father John Wadsworth did not sign a page in this album but he did sign a page, with his wife Elizabeth (Leonard) Wadsworth in the album of Frank's sister Ella M. Wadsworth.  You can see the similarity in Elizabeth's handwriting.

Four of Frank's siblings signed pages in his album.  An earlier John had died the year of his birth.  There also may have been a Frederick who did not survive to adulthood.

Brother Charles T. Wadsworth, who was born 23 December 1855 at Braintree, Massachusetts, signed a page at Holliston, Massachusetts, on May 7, 1880 and wrote "Colby '83" in one corner, presumably Colby College at Waterville, Maine.  He had also signed a page in Frank's earlier album at Fall River, Massachusetts, on June 13, 1875.

Brother George Melvin Wadsworth, who was born 4 April 1857 at South Weymouth, Massachusetts, signed a page, also on May 7, 1880 at Holliston, Massachusetts.  George's future wife, Elsie L. Warfield, also signed a page.

Brother Arthur Leonard Wadsworth, born 4 January 1864 at New Sharon, Maine, signed a page, also on May 7, 1880, at Holliston, Massachusetts.

Frank's sister Ella M. Wadsworth, or Mary Ella Wadsworth, signed a page on February 4, with no year written, and mentioned that she was in the Class of 1879; she also signed on a page shared with 14 other students in the Class of 1879.

Signers on the group page above: 1) Ella Cushing; 2) Della M. Draper; 3) Mary Driscoll; 4) Eva M. Eames; 5) Effie L. Fiske; 6) Lucy B. Nichols; 7)  Ella Wadsworth; 8) Lizzie F. Barber; 9) Annie Blake; 10) W. H. Stevens; 11) Ed. Rawson; 12) T. T. Sheedy; 13) P. F. Gahan; 14) M. M. Parker [One or both M could be a W]; 15) Lizzie Wilder.

On 26 March, 1881 at Fall River, Massachusetts, John Franklin Wadsworth married Addie Louise Lake, daughter of Joseph and Amy (Thurston) Lake.  Addie was born 11 March 1864 at Fall River, Massachusetts.  Frank and Addie made their home at Fall River, Massachusetts, and raised, I believe, five children:
  1. Lucena Elizabeth Wadsworth, born 13 August 1883 at Fall River, Massachusetts; married Frank Blaine Tew
  2. George H. Wadsworth, born 31 August 1885 at Fall River, Massachusetts; died 21 December 1890
  3. Elsie Wadsworth, born about 1888; died 1932
  4. John Franklin Wadsworth, Jr., born 24 December 1889 at Fall River, Massachusetts; married Charlotte J. Childs
  5. Arthur Lorenzo Wadsworth, born 25 January 1892 at Fall River, Massachusetts; married Elsie (Gray?)
