1860-1885 Autograph Album of Nannie E. Robinson and, Later, her niece Annie Lee Garner

Autograph album that was presented by a friend to Nannie E. Robinson at Christmas in 1860.  The album was apparently later taken over by Nannie's niece Annie Lee Garner.

The presentation page handwriting is very faint.  "This album was presented to Miss Nannie E. Robinson by a Friend on the 25th/December 1860".

The album is approximately 7" x 5-1/2" and contains the sentiments of about a dozen relatives and friends of Nannie E. Robinson and her niece Annie Lee Garner.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

The album was printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by G. G. Evans and contains three engravings, though there may have been more at one time.  The frontispiece engraving is entitled "Our Pet", after the painting by H. Howard, R.A., and engraved by S. Davenport.  The small engraving on the title page is not credited.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Nannie E. Robinson was born August 13, 1845 at Tallapoosa, Georgia, the daughter of John and Gilliam Mary P. (Lavender) Robinson, who were born in North Carolina and Tennessee, respectively.  On April 8, 1869 at Atlanta, Georgia, Nannie married Henry Clay Pendleton, son of Joseph Holmes Pendleton and Sarah M. (Hundley) Pendleton.  Nannie and Henry eventually settled at Clarkston, Georgia; they had, possibly, 13 children.

At some point between the 1860s and the late 1870s, the album apparently passed into the ownership of Nannie's niece Annie Lee Garner, born about 1867, daughter of Nannie's sister Susan Edelia (Robinson) Garner and her husband Thomas Samford Garner.  On February 1, 1888, Annie Lee Garner married John Thomas Anderson.

Annie's sister Mary E. Garner signed a page.

Annie is described as one of the "Big 4" on a page with herself, W. R. Hoyt, Cornie Hoyt and E. P. McBurney.  I believe the Hoyts were brother and sister William Russell Hoyt and Cornelia Hoyt.  Cornie inscribed this page as the handwriting of her own page, signed on July 19, 1885, illustrates.

Interestingly, signer Leonard Perry Pattillo, who inscribed his page on October 28, 1884, also married an Annie Lee, but I believe she was a different Annie Lee, perhaps Annie Lee Becker or Booker.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1883-1886 Autograph Album from Wilton, Maine, area; Presumably Owned by Minnie Augusta Marble

1883-1886 autograph album of signers from the Wilton, Maine, and Norridgewock, Maine, area.  I believe it belonged to Minerva Augusta Marble, "Minnie", of Wilton, Maine.  Many of the signers were students at W. A., presumably Wilton Academy, N.H.S., presumably Norridgewock High School, and the Eaton School at Norridgewock, Maine.  Norridgewock High School and the Eaton School may have been the same institution.

At first, because of this scrap and name on the inside front cover, I thought the album belonged to a young woman named Corinne Woodman but couldn't find anyone of that name.  However, I did find a Cony Warren Woodman who was a brother to signer Oliver Otis Woodman, who called himself the album owner's cousin.  They were the sons of Col. Ephraim Warren Woodman, who was an older half brother to Roxanna T. (Woodman) Marble, mother of Minnie.  So it's possible that Cony affixed the scrap to the inside front cover in honor of Minnie.

The first page after the title page was signed by Minnie A. Marble on January 5, 1884, or was perhaps drawn for her by someone else.  Whoever did it, spent some quality time on it.  A few people inscribed pages in the waning days of December 1883, so I'm guessing that this album was a Christmas gift.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 120 people, a few of whom also signed group pages of students.  Many people signed two or three to a page, but in most cases I don't think there was a relationship between the page sharers but rather a need to find a spot to fit in the autographs.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Minnie Augusta Marble was born about June 1870 or 1871, the daughter of Horace Delande Marble and Roxanna T. (Woodman) Marble.  Roxanna, as noted above, was the younger half-sister of Col. Ephraim Warren Woodman, father of Cony Warren Woodman and Oliver Otis Woodman, who inscribed the page below.  The boys' parents, Col. Woodman and his wife Sarah Elizabeth (Hiscock) Woodman, also a Wilton, Maine, native, had moved their family to Vernon, Mississippi.  Both parents had died by the time of this album, and the boys spent time afterward with relatives at Wilton.

Another cousin, Otto Clifford Seales, inscribed a page at Wilton, Maine, in 1885.  He was the son of Enoch Seales and Octavia S. (Woodman) Seales, who was another sister of Minnie's mother Roxanna T. (Woodman) Marble.

On 17 May 1889 at Farmington, Maine, Minnie married Ernest H. Young, son of Jotham V. B. Young and wife Maria.  Daughter Hazel Marble Young was born about July 1890.  It appears that Ernest died or left the marriage not long after Hazel's birth because on February 27, 1892 at Auburn, Maine, Minnie married George W. Goldsmith.  I'm not sure what became of that marriage, but Minnie married English immigrant George Brown on December 27, 1897 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Minnie's daughter Hazel Marble Young married Earl Everett Robbins at Wilton, Maine, in 1916.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, a different theory as to the autograph album's owner, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Minnie herself wrote her name on two group pages of students.  Minnie was one of the signers on each.

Two teachers signed pages in the album.  One of them was George Currier of Wilton, Maine.

The other was Lizzie M. Dixon of East Jay, Maine, who signed her page on September 9, 1884.

1879-1880 Autograph Album of Emma Sprague of Watertown, Wisconsin; many Temperance Movement Signers

1879-1880 autograph album of Emma Sprague of Watertown, Wisconsin, with signatures from fellow members in temperance societies, including many who attended a conference at Detroit, Michigan, in 1879.

Read more about the temperance movement up until 1881 in the book The Comprehensive History of the Rise and Progress of the Temperance Reformation from the Earliest Period to September 1881, by Peter Turner Winskill, published in 1881.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 90 of Emma's friends and "brethren".  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this list.

One signer was Eugene W. Clafin, twice a candidate for U.S. President on the Prohibition ticket.  He inscribed his page at Waukesha, Wisconsin, on June 5, 1879.

Right Worthy Grand Templar Theo. D. Kanouse prepared a report in advance of the 1879 convention, which you can read here.  Both he and his wife signed pages in Emma's album, he on February 15, 1880, and she on February 17, 1880.

Charles C. Southwell inscribed a page at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 26, 1879 and included a sketch.

If you have information on Emma Sprague of Watertown, Wisconsin, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1859-1865+ Autograph Album of Calista L. (Hiland) Watriss of Hartland, Vermont

1859-1897 autograph album of Calista L. (Hiland) Watriss of Hartland, Vermont, with many sentiments gathered while she was visiting, or perhaps living briefly, at Whitewater, Wisconsin.  The Watriss surname has variants of Watrous, Watress and Waterhouse, among others.

Most autographs date to 1859 and the 1860s, but there is at least one later one, the autograph of Calista's granddaughter Blanche Watriss Leonard of Hartland, Vermont, signed in 1897.  Blanche was born on December 25, 1886, the daughter of George Sylvester Leonard and Hattie Calista (Watriss) Leonard. Sadly, Blanche's parents had died by 1897, her mother in 1889 and her father in 1891.

Blanche signed her name on a page with the inscriptions of Mary L. Hamilton of Whitewater, Wisconsin, and Miss J. L. Rice of Hartland, Vermont.  They may have signed the page years earlier than Blanche, and there may or may not have been a relationship between them and Blanche.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 5-1/2" and contains the sentiments and autographs of 217 people, most of whom wrote their names on pages shared with others, whole families in a few cases.  As noted above, many of the autographs were collected at Whitewater, Wisconsin, in 1859 and 1860; many more were signed by folks living at Hartland, Vermont.  Perhaps Whitewater was a popular destination for settlers from the Hartland area.

An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal and family information they may have offered, appear at the end of this post.  Many signers were Calista's family members and in-laws.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Calista L. Hyland was born in February 20, 1826 at Hartland, Vermont, the daughter of James Hiland and Lavina (Frost) Hiland, who were born in Massachusetts and Maine, respectively.  The Hiland surname appears variously as Hyland and Highland.  I'd like to know Lavina (Frost) Hiland's place of birth in Maine and the names of her parents.

On September 6, 1841 at Hartland, Vermont, Calista married Henry B. Watriss, son of Charles Frederick Watriss and Hannah (McCollester) Watriss.

Calista and Henry had a son Albert, who died in 1849.  I don't know if they had other children before daughter Hattie Calista Watress in 1862, mother of Blanche, noted above, but there are no other children buried with them at the Hartland Village Cemetery, according to a list posted online by the Hartland Historical Society [kudos to them for a well-done website].

Whether the trip to Whitewater, Wisconsin, was a planned move that didn't work out or just a visit, I don't know, but she and Henry were back at Hartland, Vermont by the time of Harriet Calista Watriss' birth on November 9, 1862.  I haven't yet found them in the 1860 Census, so perhaps they were in between places at that time.  There are autographs from Whitewater, Wisconsin, up to March 13, 1860, but many are undated, so there could have been later ones.

Henry B. Watrous died in 1898.  The 1910 Census of Hartland, Vermont, shows Calista living in the household of her granddaughter Blanche Watriss (Leonard) Bagley, her husband Harry A. Bagley and their two children. Calista died in 1912 and is buried with her husband, son Albert and daughter Hattie Calista (Watriss) Leonard at Hartland Village Cemetery, Hartland, Vermont.

Below, Calista's cousin Ira Hiland of Boston, Massachusetts, his wife Martha (Manson) Hiland and their daughter Sarah M. Hiland shared a page.  Refer to the list of signers for the names of more relatives and in-laws.

Two of Henry B. Watriss' brothers signed pages in the album: Norman E. Watriss and Luke Willard Watriss.  Refer to the list of signers for more members with a connection to the Watriss and Hiland families.
