1879-1880s Autograph Album of Daniel Morrison Rowe of Belmont, New Hampshire; Student at New Hampton, New Hampshire

Update April 27, 2015: Be sure to scroll down to the comments section for information a reader has provided on inscribers George D. Bullock, who became a physician at Weymouth, Massachusetts, and David Law Aldrich of Rhode Island, who died about three years after inscribing his page.

1879-1880s autograph album that belonged to Daniel Morrison Rowe of Belmont, New Hampshire, while he was attending school at New Hampton, New Hampshire.

The album measures approximately 8" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 84 of Daniel's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  Some students mentioned the New Hampton Institute, and some, New Hampton Commercial College, which was a post-secondary program at the Institute.  Daniel presumably attended both programs.  An alphabetical list of surnames and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Daniel Morrison Rowe was born March 3, 1863 at Upper Gilmanton, New Hampshire, the son of Charles Henry Rowe and Marietta Perley (Ladd) Rowe.   Daniel's mother inscribed one of the pages with a printed design.

Another inscriber indicated a cousin relationship with Daniel.  She was Etta Rowe of Sanbornton, New Hampshire, who inscribed her page at New Hampton, New Hampshire, on April 9, 1882.

Another person with the surname Rowe was Mary Ella Rowe, who didn't indicate a family relationship on the page she inscribed at New Hampton, New Hampshire, on April 6, 1880.  She also chose one of the pages with a printed design.

On June 2, 1887 at Belmont, New Hampshire, Daniel Morrison Rowe married Florence Nightingale Bray, "Flora", daughter of George H. and Ann (Moody) Bray.  The Bray family had come to New England from Yorkshire, England about 1885. By the time of the 1880 Census, they were at Laconia, New Hampshire.  Flora inscribed a page in Daniel's album on October 12, 1884.

Daniel and Flora operated a grocery business and had at least one child, daughter Ethel Marion Rowe, born in 1898.  Sadly, Ethel, who died in 1945, predeceased her parents.  Daniel died in 1947, and long-lived Flora in 1957.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

    2. PS. George D Bullock & wife had another daughter, Marion, born in June 1899. Must have married after 1920.

One of the other students from RI was:
David Law Aldrich, of Hope Valley, RI, who only lived a few more years after signing the autograph book. He was the son of David Law Aldrich and Mary M Gray, and died Dec. 11, 1883, according to findagrave.com, and is buried in North Burial Ground, Providence. Findagrave has the wrong name for his mother. Susan Sheldon was his father's second wife. Compare 1880 census and RI birth records of his father's children, all at familysearch.org.

      The 3rd student from RI:
Joseph Timmins is giving me a little trouble. If I find anything definite, I will follow up with it.

      1. Again, many thanks! It's disheartening to learn that some of the inscribers don't get to enjoy their full portion.
