1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Ella J. Oban of New Hampshire and South Dakota

[February 28, 2015 - post amended to included information from a reader; amendments in bold.]

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to New Hampshire native Ella J. Oban whose family moved to Loyalton, South Dakota, then in Dakota Territory, which attained statehood on November 2, 1889.

Most of the inscribers lived at West Lebanon, New Hampshire; and the Dakota Territory towns of Vermont City and Ipswich, both located in South Dakota.   From the reader:  "Vermont City and Loyalton are the same city. There was much "discussion" over the naming of the area at the time it was being settled. The Oban's were part of the delegation from Vermont who moved to settle the area... The town of Loyalton was dissolved on May 27, 1982."

It's interesting how New Englanders moved West, made new homes for themselves - and frequently gave their new homes a New England touch in name and appearance.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 57 of Ella's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

The title page has the handwritten word "Acconite" on it; perhaps the writer meant aconite, a poison and sometime medicinal.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ella J. Oban was born October 21, 1869 in New Hampshire, the daughter of Israel and Sarah (Little) Oban.  The surname Oban derives from "Aubin dit Lambert"; other family members anglicized the name to Oben.   Ella's paternal uncles Henry Oban and Nathan Oban, both of West Lebanon, New Hampshire, inscribed pages in the album.

I believe Ella had five siblings, three brothers and two sisters.  Sadly, one brother, Arthur Washington Oban, born in 1874, died in 1880, presumably before Ella starting collecting sentiments in this album.

Brother Walter Edward Oban of Comit [Comet?], Montana, inscribed a page on March 26, 1897.  He was born in 1877.

Brother Thomas Israel Oban inscribed a page at Vermont City, South Dakota, on December 26, 1887.  He was born in 1872.

On October 2, 1892 at Livingston, Montana, Ella J. Oban married David O. McClanahan, son of David and Mary (Wilson) McClanahan.  David was born in Illinois about October 1863.   Ella and David would have, I believe, three children.
  1. Perley Oscar McClanahan, born March 13, 1893 in Montana.  Sadly, he died in 1921 in Lane County, Oregon as the result of a swimming accident.  Read an account of the accident here.
  2. Isaac Lorenzo McClanahan, born February 27, 1894 in Montana
  3. Howard A. McClanahan, born about 1903 in Montana
The family later lived in Washington and Oregon.  Ella died in California in 1949.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1879-1892 Autograph Album of Elnora Adele Redman of Islesboro, Maine

1879-1892 autograph album that belonged to Elnora Adele Redman, "Nora", of Islesboro, Maine.  She started her album on May 25, 1879.  Among the surnames that appear multiple times: Babbidge; Coombs; Gilkey; Hatch; Parker; Redman; Rose; Sprague; Veazie; Williams;

The album measures approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 86 of Elnora's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Elnora Adele Redman, "Nora", was born October 18, 1862 at Islesboro, Maine, the daughter of Captain Benjamin Robert Redman and Ethelina Chestina (Gilkey) Redman.  Sadly, Elnora's mother had died by the time Elnora started her album, but her father inscribed a page at Islesboro, Maine, on December 4, 1879.

Elnora had, I believe, 5 siblings, but only two, her brothers Walter Herman Redman and Ralph Winchester Redman survived to adulthood.  The W. H. Redman of Atlantic, Massachusetts, who inscribed a page with dates of 1881 and 1882, may have been Walter Herman Redman.  It may have been his wife, Emma Violette (Platt) Redman, who was the Violet Redman who inscribed a page in the album.

The R. W. Redman of Bucksport, Maine may have been Elnora's brother Ralph Winchester Redman.

On January 9, 1881, Elnora married master mariner Charles E. Williams, son of Emory Franklin Williams and Charlotte Amanda (Pendleton) Williams, all three of whom inscribed pages in Elnora's album.  Charles inscribed his page on June 20, 1880 at Islesboro, Maine.

Elnora and Charles raised, I think, three children and lived at Islesboro, Maine, and then at Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Charles had died sometime after the enumeration of the 1930 Census and before 1937 when Elnora was described as a widow in a Cambridge Directory.  Elnora died in 1957.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

I'd love it if a reader could untangle the riddle of the identify of the inscriber "Friend", who left the following tantalizing message:  "There was a family in our town That did consist of eight; As in times of yore, the world ore [sic], Each one could choose their mate.  My 1st 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 6th to spell each Name, four vowels fix.  It takes two vowels to spell the other, Likewise their father and their mother."

1880s Autograph Album of Harry E. Powers of Bowdoinham, Maine

1880s autograph album that belonged to Harry E. Powers of Bowdoinham, Maine, with sentiments collected at Maine State College, now the University of Maine, Orono, Maine; Dirigo Business College at Augusta, Maine; and Bowdoin College.

The album measures approximately 7-1/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 40 of Harry's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Harry E. Powers was born in 1864 in California, while his parents, Elias Hutchins Powers and Abbie (possibly Plummer) Powers, natives of Maine, were out West.  They living at Vallejo, California, at the time of the 1870 Census, where Elias was working as a ship carpenter.

By 1880, the family was back at Bowdoinham, Maine, farming.  If Harry had siblings, they were not shown on the 1860-1880 Censuses.

Harry attended the Maine State College at Orono, Maine, presumably with the Class of 1886.  He may also have taken some classes at Dirigo Business College at Augusta, Maine, about 1883.

At least two of Harry's cousins inscribed pages in his album.  Charles Luther Powers inscribed his page on September 29, 1883 at Bath, Maine.  He was the son of Henry Martin Powers, who was a brother to Harry's father Elias Hutchins Powers.  Charles' brother Frank M. Powers of Bath, Maine, inscribed a page in either September 1881 or September 1887.  Frank's wife Nellie (Morse) Powers inscribed a page on August 6, 1882, days after her marriage to Frank.

On December 6, 1889, Harry E. Powers married Hattie M. Trask, daughter, I think of Charles M. and Lois Boynton (Little) Trask.   Harry and Hattie farmed at Bowdoinham, Maine, and had at least one child, a daughter Thelma.

Hattie's brother Burton W. Trask of Bowdoinham, Maine, inscribed a page in Harry's album on March 5, 1883.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

W. H. Merriam, presumably Willis Henry Merriam, of Houlton, Maine, inscribed a page on August 27, 1882.  He is presumably the artist who sketched a bird on the facing page and incorporated "M. S. C. Class 86" into the intricate design.  M.S.C. is Maine State College, now the University of Maine.

1887-1891 Autograph Album of Wilmer of West Lebanon, Maine; possibly Wilmer Wentworth Hayes

1887-1891 autograph album that belonged to a Wilmer, presumably from the West Lebanon, Maine, area, where most of the inscribers resided.  He may have been Wilmer Wentworth Hayes.

The album measures approximately 8" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 32 of Wilmer's friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, in case the album owner was Wilmer Wentworth Hayes:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Wilmer Wentworth Hayes was born September 9, 1871 at Lebanon, Maine, the son of Samuel Demeritt Hayes and Martha (LeGro) Hayes.  On January 12, 1903, Wilmer married Mary Ellen Bradley, daughter, I believe, of Daniel and Margaret Bradley.  Wilmer and Mary Ellen had a daughter, Vera Elinor Hayes, born in 1905.  They lived at Lebanon, Maine, and then Rochester, New Hampshire.  Wilmer died at Concord, New Hampshire, in 1955.

Two people with the surname Wentworth inscribed pages in the album.  G. A. Wentworth of Milton, New Hampshire, inscribed a page at West Lebanon, Maine, on April 15, 1887.

Evan P. Wentworth of Lebanon, Maine, inscribed a page on October 10, 1887.

If you have corrections and/or additions on the information about Wilmer Wentworth Hayes, if you think the owner may have been another person or if you have information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment.

1850s Autograph Album of Sophia H. Keller of Pleasant Run, Ohio

1850s+ autograph album that belonged to Sophia H. Keller of Pleasant Run, Ohio, from before and after her marriage to John B. Caldwell.  Inscribers hailed from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Louisiana and other states.  Many of them were Sophia's relatives and in-laws from the Keller, Caldwell, Monteith, Parr and Trumbo families.

Below, the first end paper and the last:

Sophia inscribed a page of welcome at Pleasant Run, Ohio, on June 25, 1855.  She also added her name to several of the many group pages in the album and may have penned some of the unsigned pages.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 6" and contains the sentiments of possibly 200 of more of Sophia's relatives and friends.  The number is hard to determine as many people inscribed pages and added their names to group pages.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

The album is in fair condition, with separated covers and some portions unbound.  It's possible there are missing pages, but the pages you would expect to find are all present, such as the title page, below, which shows that the album was published by J. C. Riker of 129 Fulton Street in New York City.  Two hand-colored floral illustrations, in addition to that on the title page, survive; there may have been more.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Sophia H. Keller was born July 19, 1830 in Fairfield County, Ohio, the daughter of Daniel and Susannah (Ruffner) Keller.  Sophia had, I believe ten siblings, at least two of whom inscribed pages in her album.  Augustus Ruffner inscribed a two-page sentiment on September 5, 1856 and added his name to a group page.

Sophia's sister Martha Anne Keller, "Mat", inscribed individual pages and added her name to a group page.

On September 17, 1856, Sophia H. Keller married John B. Caldwell, son of David and Mary Caldwell, who moved from Ohio to Edina, Missouri.  John was born in Ohio on February 13, 1829.  I believe Sophia and John had eleven children before Sophia's death in 1888.  In 1890, John married Allie A. Burns, daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Rice) Burns.  He died in 1915.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Because of the list of inscribers is so extensive, I'm not able to show many images of pages in the album, but I wanted to feature at least one of the group pages.  Surnames on the page:  Bonebreak; Caldwell [multiple]; Cornell [?]; Coulson [multiple]; Ewing; Healey; Jackson; Keller [Sophia, who inscribed the center box]; Kumler [?]; Makly [?]; Miller [2]; Myers; Powell [?]; Spencer; Trumbo [multiple]; Wheeler; Winter.

Another page worth featuring: that inscribed in April 1856 by Mollie E. P. Seib of Allodium Mound, which I think was located at Bremen, Ohio.
