February 2, 1865 International Order of Odd Fellows document from the Ancient Brothers Lodge #4 at Portland, Maine, signed by Secretary N. G. Cummings, advising Lyman M. Smith, Esq., that he had been elected to membership in the Lodge. Cummings was Nathaniel Greenleaf Cummings.
Lyman M. Smith may have been the Lyman M. Smith who was born about 1835 in Maine and was working as a grocer in Portland when he was shown on a Civil War Draft Registration Record and as a framer or manufacturer of picture frames, or both, in Portland, Maine, according to 1870 Census. Also in the household in 1870 was George W. Smith, about two years older, who was presumably Lyman's brother.
Nathaniel Greenleaf Cummings was a custom-house officer at Portland, Maine, and an active I.O.O.F. member. Read more about him here in the Cummings Memorial: A Genealogical History of the Descendants of Isaac Cummings, an Early Settler of Topsfield, Massachusetts, compiled by Rev. George Mooar and published in 1903. Nathaniel Greenleaf Cummings died on the 4th of July in 1894.
